Devī Stotra Mañjarī – Brief Introduction
Devī Stotra Mañjarī is a beautiful garland of hymns composed by Kāvyakaṇṭha Vāsiṣṭha Śrī Gaṇapati Muni in praise of the Divine Mother. Across eleven paṭalas, the Muni worships Devī in many forms—as Pārvatī, Gaurī, Umā, Kālī, Reṇukā, Cāmuṇḍā, Bhadrakālī, Durgā, Śatākṣī, Bhrāmarī, and as the supreme Power behind creation, protection, dissolution, knowledge, beauty, compassion, and liberation.
In the first paṭala, the Muni praises the glory of Himālaya, who became blessed as the father of Bhavānī. Devī is presented as the universal Mother, born for the welfare of the world, radiant with compassion, purity, and auspiciousness.
In the second paṭala, the poet describes the incomparable beauty of the Divine Mother. Her form, face, eyes, smile, speech, hair, feet, and divine grace are praised with delicate poetic imagery. Yet this beauty is not merely physical; it is the beauty that enchants even Śiva and gives life again to the power of love.
The third paṭala continues this graceful description of Devī’s divine form. Her hands and feet, face, eyes, lips, teeth, voice, gait, and wisdom are presented as embodiments of perfection. Through this, the Muni shows that Devī is the complete union of beauty, knowledge, sweetness, and supreme spiritual power.
In the fourth paṭala, the focus turns especially to Devī’s smile. Her gentle smile is praised as a power that removes sorrow, purifies the world, conquers Śiva’s heart, awakens wisdom in sages, and dispels inner darkness more powerfully than the moon dispels outer darkness.
The fifth paṭala is brief and prayerful. The Muni turns from poetic description to direct devotion, asking that the Mother’s feet ever dwell in his mind. Her feet are presented as the true refuge praised by sages and as the ornament of the Vedas themselves.
In the sixth paṭala, Devī’s feet are again worshipped as the source of protection, auspiciousness, and truth. The Muni declares that all that is seen is fleeting, while Devī alone shines as the true inner consciousness.
The seventh paṭala gives the practical spiritual message of the hymn: abandon the painful burden of vāsanās and meditate on the Mother of Gaṇeśa. Those who contemplate Her lotus feet cross the ocean of worldly existence and attain the supreme state.
The eighth paṭala praises Devī in majestic and mantra-like forms. She is the daughter of the mountain, the destroyer of demons such as Caṇḍa, Muṇḍa, Dhūmranetra, and Raktabīja, the beloved of Śiva, the dweller of holy places, the protector of devotees, and the power who destroys the inner enemies of the heart.
The ninth paṭala praises Devī as the auspicious Mother united with Śiva, the beloved of the blue-throated Lord, the Mother of Gaṇapati, the giver of strength, and the remover of suffering. Her feet are declared to be the true wealth that protects the soul even when all worldly wealth perishes.
The tenth paṭala has a more direct spiritual and biographical tone. Devī is praised as the destroyer of sin and the inner Guru. The Muni recalls the grace by which his Guru, Bhagavān Sri Ramana Maharshi, became the seer of the Supreme. Devī is also praised as Kāli, whose name was sung by Sri Ramakrishna.
The eleventh paṭala expands into a grand vision of Devī in many forms—Reṇukā, Mahākālī, Bhadrakālī, Cāmuṇḍā, Śivadūtī, Kauśikī, Durgā, Śatākṣī, Ekavīrā, Kālarātri, and Bhrāmarī. Finally, the Muni identifies Her as the inner essence of all powers: intelligence in the intelligent, strength in the strong, peace in the peaceful, devotion in the devoted, memory, compassion, knowledge, prosperity, modesty, nourishment, and even the cosmic Māyā of the Creator.
Message of the Work
The central message of Devī Stotra Mañjarī is that the Divine Mother is not merely one goddess among many forms, but the supreme Conscious Power manifesting as beauty, compassion, wisdom, protection, destruction of evil, spiritual awakening, and liberation. Her feet are the refuge of the devotee; Her smile removes sorrow; Her glance gives grace; Her power sustains the universe; and Her remembrance destroys inner impurities. Through this hymn, Gaṇapati Muni teaches that true wealth, true protection, and true freedom lie in surrendering the mind to the Divine Mother and realizing Her as the living consciousness within all beings.
