Śiva Śatakam – Brief Introduction and Significance
Śiva Śatakam is a profound hymn of one hundred verses composed by Kāvyakaṇṭha Vāsiṣṭha Śrī Gaṇapati Muni in praise of Bhagavān Śiva, the supreme Lord who shines as the inner Self of all beings, the ruler of the universe, the destroyer of sin, and the giver of liberation. In this stotra, Śiva is adored not merely as a deity with a sacred form, but as the all-pervading Reality present in the sun, fire, wind, space, the heart of beings, and the entire cosmos.
The verses beautifully move from devotional praise to deep spiritual vision. Śiva is described as Aṣṭamūrti, the Lord of the eight cosmic forms; as Paśupati, the compassionate protector of beings; as the source of grace whose glance purifies the devotee; and as the supreme Consciousness beyond all names and forms. The hymn also praises the divine presence of Goddess Gaurī, the sacred Gaṅgā flowing through Śiva’s matted locks, and the saving power of Śiva’s holy names.
Recitation of Śiva Śatakam is especially beneficial for cultivating devotion, inner purity, courage, detachment, and peace of mind. The hymn repeatedly declares that remembrance, praise, and nāma-saṅkīrtana of Śiva remove sins, sorrow, fear, and worldly afflictions. It teaches that the lotus feet of Śiva are the true refuge of seekers, and that chanting His names is one of the simplest and highest means to attain spiritual welfare and liberation.
For devotees and sādhakas, this Śatakam serves as both a prayer and a meditation. It inspires surrender to Śiva, awakens discrimination, purifies the heart, and turns the mind away from worldly dependence toward the supreme grace of the Lord. Its recitation brings the devotee into the sacred current of Śiva-bhakti, leading gradually to inner stillness, divine protection, and the realization of the supreme Self.
॥ kāvyakaṇṭha vāsiṣṭha śrīgaṇapatimuni viracitam śivaśatakam ॥
atha daśamaṃ śārdūlavikrīḍitadaśakam
yaḥ prajñānamayo yamāhurajaraṃ yenābhitaḥ sthīyate
yasmai karmasamarpayanti munayo yasmātparo nāparaḥ ।
yasyāsāvasurambare tapati naḥ prāṇāndaghāno raviḥ
yasminprotamidaṃ samastabhuvanaṃ kasmaicidasmai namaḥ ॥ 91।
kanyāśītagireriyam sulalitairgātrairiyaṃ bhāminī
māteyaṃ gajavaktratārakajitorityalpadṛṣṭeḥ kathāḥ ।
sarvasminnacare care ca vibhavādekā parā jāgratī
śaktiḥ kācana sā vicārarasikairārādhyate nātha te ॥ 92 ॥
keṣāñcitsa hiraṇmayo matimatāṃ kṛṣṇaḥ pareṣāṃ vidā
manyeṣāṃ viduṣāṃ sudhāṃśudhavalastredhā pareṣāṃ paraḥ
ke'pi sthūladṛśāṃ jagatpativapurdhyānāya kalpā ime
satyaṃ tu jvaladapyabādhyamabhito gūḍhaṃ guhāyāmiva ॥ 93 ॥
sauraṃ maṇḍalamujjvalaṃ tava tapaḥ śvāsaścaranmāruto
bimbaṃ mecakatoyajātasuhṛdo mandasmitaṃ sundaram
citraṃ kandukakhelanaṃ vasumatīlokasya tiryagbhramiḥ
ko vā bhāṣitumīśa te prabhavati svalpaśruto vaibhavam ॥ 94 ॥
saṃśliṣyanprakṛtiṃ rajoguṇamayīṃ dehe virābhaṇyase
bimbe'rkasya hiraṇyagarbha uditaḥ śuddhāṃ śritaḥ sāttvikīm ।
īśastvaṃ paratāmasīmupagato guptāṃ nabhasyucyase
dhenuḥ śrīrgirijeti śāktasamaye yasyāstridhā viśrutiḥ ॥ 95॥
ūrdhvaṃ bhāsi hiraṇmayāṅgasakalaprāṇe ravermaṇḍale
loke ca dhvanidhāmni rudramarutāmantaḥ samuddyotase ।
asmākaṃ hṛdayeṣu ca kṣitijuṣāṃ vaiśvānara bhrājase
śeṣaṃ sarvamidaṃ pacanapi para vyāpto'bhito vartase ॥ 96 ॥
bhūtattvaṃ tava śailajātvamapi te śakteḥ prabho paṇḍitāḥ
cāturyeṇa samarthayanti yuvayorlīlāśarīragraham ।
kecidvigrahakalpanaṃ jaḍadhiyāmarthekṛtaṃ sādhaya
ntyanyeṃ'śāvataraṃ bhaṇanti bhaṇitaṃ bhāktaṃ pare manvate ॥ 97 ॥
māhātmyaṃ tava vaktu kaḥ paśupate yadromatulyaṃ mahat
brahmāṇḍaṃ caritāni veda tava kaḥ sarvāntaro bhāsi yaḥ ।
yāgaṃ ko vidadhātu te varadakairyasya svamevākhilaṃ
nāmaikaṃ tava sūribhiḥ prakaṭitaṃ ṅe'ntaṃ hṛdādi śraye ॥ 98 ।।
drākṣāmākṣipati kṣiṇoti madhuno darpaṃ sitāṃ nindati
kṣīraṃ no bahu manyate praśamayatyagryaṃ sudhāyā yaśaḥ ।
kiṃ vānyatkathayāma taṃ ca ghṛṇayā kāntā'dharaṃ vīkṣate
prāpto janmasabhaktavaktrakamalānnāmadhvanirnātha te ॥ 99 ॥
kiṃ yāgairatidāruṇena tapasā kiṃ vā kimabhyarcanaiḥ
ekā lokahitaṅkarī vijayate mukterupāyaḥ paraḥ ।
kāmāre karuṇānidhe paśupate bhūteśa gaurīpate
śambho śaṅkara candracūḍa jagatāṃ nātheti nāmāvalī ॥ 100 ॥
॥ iti śrībhagavanmaharṣiramaṇāntevāsino vāsiṣṭhasya narasiṃhasūnoḥ gaṇapateḥ kṛtiḥ śivaśatakaṃ samāptam ॥
