Indra- The Sovereign Supreme King of The Universe
Indra Vimshati is a twenty-verse hymn composed by Kavyakantha Vasishtha Sri Ganapati Muni in praise of Lord Indra. Divided into four sections of five verses each, the hymn presents Indra as the supreme leader of the gods, destroyer of hostile forces, bestower of strength, protector of the worlds, and sovereign power behind the forces of nature.
The opening verses are deeply devotional, praising Indra as the lord of the gods and seeking refuge in his worship as a remedy for fear and inner impurity. The later verses describe his association with rain, thunder, lightning, the atmosphere, and immense cosmic power. Indra is portrayed not merely as a mythological deity, but as the divine principle of strength and rulership that sustains the three worlds and overcomes forces that appear otherwise unconquerable.
In the concluding section, Ganapati Muni presents a more profound vision of Indra. His glory may be sung, but his true form cannot easily be grasped in meditation or fully defined by intellectual knowledge. His visible cosmic manifestation is identified with the dense material world itself, while the Earth that supports all beings is celebrated as an expression of his greatness. The hymn concludes with a prayer that Indra grant the devotee abundant prosperity, contentment, independence, and a heart filled with joy.
॥ kāvyakaṇṭha vāsiṣṭha śrīgaṇapatimuni viracitam indraviṃśatiḥ ।।
prathamo vargaḥ
akhilanāyakaṃ makhabhujāṃ varam ।
arividāraṇaṃ harihayaṃ bhaje ॥ 1 ॥
madhumucāmṛcāṃ paricayī vṛṣā ।
rasakirāṃ girāṃ bhavatu lokitā ।। 2 ।।
amararāja me trimalavāraṇe ।
bhajanameva te bhavatu bheṣajam ।। 3 ।।
pratibhaye gade pratibhaṭe paṭau ।
varada tāraṇaṃ tava niṣevaṇam ॥ 4 ॥
ayamihāśrito bhayaharendra te ।
madhurapadyabhṛnnadhuri khidyatu ।। 5 ।।
dvitīyo vargaḥ
vṛtramayi bhṛndannutsṛjasi nīram ।
utsavasameto garjasi gabhīram ।। 6 ।।
ugrataranādaṃ dīptatarabhāsam ।
apsu viharantaṃ devavibhumīḍe ॥ 7 ॥
vajradharakīlī bhāti bhuvi pātā ।
bhūri balaśālī tvaṃ nabhasi netā ॥ 8 ॥
manthanata āsīdeṣa iha yajñe ।
gharṣaṇaviśeṣādvyomani sa jajñe ।। 9 ।।
bhūrimahimāḍhyam sanmunibhirīḍyam ।
trātasuracakraṃ taṃnamataśakram ।। 10 ।।
tṛtīyo vargaḥ
asuradhipiṇḍaṃ taṭidadhibhūtam ।
ayamamarāṇāṃ patiradhidaivam ।। 11 ।।
jagadayametatprabhavati bhartum ।
jagadaridaryākṣayamapi kartum ।। 12 ।।
ayamadhinātho bhavati balasya ।
ata ucito’sya prabhurakhilasya ।। 13 ।।
narasuradaityānvitamapi nūnam ।
balavibhave’smāt tribhuvanamūnam ।। 14 ।।
ayamatimattaiḥ karibhirajayyam ।
ghaṭayati siṃhaṃ mṛgaśiśujayyam ।। 15 ।।
caturtho vargaḥ
rākāśaśikīrti pākāsuraśatrum ।
ākāśamahīśaṃ śokāpahamīḍe ।। 16 ।।
nirjitya samastān bhāvānapi jiṣṇo ।
samrāḍ bhuvanānāṃ āsīḥ prabhaviṣṇo ।। 17 ।।
jānāmi maruttvan gānāya yaśaste ।
dhyānāya na rūpaṃ jñānāya na tattvam ।। 18 ।।
loke sthitibhājāṃ yatte ghanamūrtiḥ ।
dhātrī nikhilānāṃ seyaṃ tava kīrtiḥ ।। 19 ।।
tuṣṭiṃ bahuvittāṃ svārāḍaniyattām ।
ānanditacittāṃ bhaktasya vidhattām ।। 20 ।।
