Introduction to Śrī Pavanāṣṭakam

Śrī Pavanāṣṭakam is a beautiful eight-verse hymn composed by Kāvyakaṇṭha Vāsiṣṭha Śrī Gaṇapati Muni in praise of Pavana, Vāyu, the divine Wind-God and the life-breath of the universe.

In this hymn, Vāyu is adored as the prāṇa of the entire cosmos, moving freely through the vast sky and sustaining all beings day and night by the command of the Supreme Lord. The poet offers his words to Vāyu with deep affection, comparing them to refreshing nectar offered to a tired traveller. The hymn also presents speech itself as a sacred maiden, refined, beautified, and offered to the Lord of the sky.

The second half of the hymn becomes more contemplative. Vāyu is praised as beloved to the whole universe, as the invisible power behind every living body, and as the vast presence moving through the sky where birds play and stars shine like flowers. The hymn also hints at a deeper spiritual vision: by meditating on Vāyu beyond the movements of the mind, the seeker can glimpse the immortal reality.
