tṛtīyo haṃsamālā stabakaḥ
This Stabaka is a beautiful hymn to the grace-bestowing glance of Śacī Devī, Indrāṇī, the queen of the Devas and beloved of Vajrapāṇi Indra. Śrī Gaṇapati Muni prays that Her gentle smile may remove the root of delusion and the darkness hidden in the heart.
The main theme of this Stabaka is Indrāṇī’s dṛṣṭi — Her divine glance. Her glance is described as showering nectar, flowing with compassion, protecting those who bow to Her, destroying sin, nourishing higher knowledge, and creating auspiciousness. The poet seeks Her vision for strength, wisdom, devotion, and the upliftment of Bhārata.
A striking image appears when Her dark sidelong glance is compared to a rain-cloud that makes the peacocks of devotion dance. Those blessed by Her kaṭākṣa become poets, teachers, reformers, patriots, yogins, and servants of dharma. Some compose faultless poetry, some teach the essence of wisdom, some uplift their community through noble conduct, and some liberate their nation from bondage.
The Stabaka also contrasts Her loving glance toward Indra in heaven with Her compassionate glance toward devotees on earth. Her glance gives strength to Indra; may the same compassionate glance give strength to us. Her leftward glances may delight the Lord, but Her right and auspicious glances are invoked for the devotees.
The final verses become a moving prayer for Bhāratabhūmi. The poet laments that Bhārata, having forgotten the Mother for a long time, has fallen into misfortune. He does not ask for the destruction of the West, but prays that the Mother should now look with compassion upon the East, which has become helpless and disappointed. He requests Śacī to strengthen Narasiṃha’s son — Gaṇapati Muni himself — for the protection and upliftment of Bhārata.
This Stabaka is therefore a hymn of divine glance, compassion, knowledge, poetic inspiration, national awakening, and spiritual strength.
