Guru Dattatreya - The Embodiment of Supreme Guru Sakti

Guru Gītam – Introduction

Guru Gītam, composed by Kavyakantha Vasistha Sri Ganapati Muni, is a profound hymn that contemplates the Guru, the external spiritual teacher, as the very radiance of Brahman shining in the heart. In this hymn, the Guru is revealed as the supreme principle from which the un-manifest becomes manifest, by which the universe is sustained, and into which all things finally dissolve.

The opening verses present the Guru as the cosmic foundation of existence. The countless worlds and the entire brahmāṇḍa rest upon that incomparable Reality. The light of the sun and planets, the power of Brahmā and the gods, and the very strength behind all divine forces are traced back to this one supreme source. Thus, the Guru is not limited to a human form, but is identified with the luminous, all-supporting Brahman.

The hymn then turns inward. Through meditation on this Reality, seekers become absorbed in the bliss of the Self. Firm abidance in it is liberation itself, and even the sacred Vedic metres and hymns find their meaning in that supreme truth. Śrī Ganapati Muni prays that this Brahman, known as Praṇava, may shine in his heart in the beloved form of Ramaṇa, his chosen Guru.

A central yogic vision of the hymn describes the divine power dwelling in the lotus of the heart, rising toward the lotus of the head, and later flowing as the power of the senses. When directed outward, it gives rise to the illusion of body-consciousness; when turned inward again, it grants the direct experience of unity with the Self. The Guru is therefore shown as the inner force that reverses the movement of consciousness from multiplicity to Self-realization.

In the later verses, the Guru is praised as the inner light of the Self, shining as Bhagavn Ramana in the pure lotus of the heart. From this lamp of Ramaṇa, the light spreads among the followers of Ganapati Muni, adorning the walls of speech with the beautiful pictures of song. This image suggests that the Guru’s grace becomes poetry, mantra, wisdom, and living inspiration in the hearts and words of the disciples.

The hymn culminates in the vision of the Guru as formless, supportless, sky-like, full, silent, and beyond all sound. While scriptural listening gives indirect knowledge, the special power of association with the Guru becomes the cause of direct realization. Thus, Guru Gītam is both a philosophical hymn to Brahman and an intimate devotional offering to Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharsi, whom Ganapati Muni experienced as the living embodiment of that supreme Guru-principle.
