Mother Renuka Of Kundalipura
Renuka Gitam – Introduction
"Renuka Gitam" is a powerful Sanskrit hymn composed by Kāvyakantha Vasistha Sri Ganapati Muni in praise of Mother Reṇukā, the presiding Goddess of Padaivedu, traditionally known as Kuṇḍalīpura. The hymn is filled with intense devotion, complete surrender, profound spiritual insight, and an intimate appeal to the Divine Mother for protection and grace.
The historical background of this Gītam gives it exceptional significance. In 1908, Śrī Gaṇapati Muni was facing serious danger due to false accusations and suspicions raised against him before the British authorities. Secret police officers were sent to investigate him and, if sufficient evidence were found, to arrest him. At that time, the Muni was staying at the sacred shrine of Mother Reṇukā in Padaivedu.
Through his inner vision, Gaṇapati Muni became aware that the officers were approaching the temple in disguise. He then entered the temple precincts and began circumambulating the small shrine of Mother Reṇukā. As he walked around the sanctum, he spontaneously sang Sanskrit verses, pouring out his heart to the Mother and praying for her protection. In this way, *Reṇukā Gītam* emerged as an inspired and impromptu composition born directly from a moment of great danger, surrender, and divine communion.
When the officers arrived, they questioned Gaṇapati Muni at length. The manuscript of *Umā Sahasram*, which they had been ordered to examine, was lying openly before them. Yet, by the grace of Mother Reṇukā, they did not inspect it. Instead, after conversing with the Muni and understanding his spiritual life and intentions, their suspicions were completely removed. The officers who had come to investigate and possibly arrest him departed with reverence and later became closely associated with him.
Śrī Gaṇapati Muni himself declared that it was the grace and power of Mother Reṇukā, invoked through this Gītam, that protected him from grave danger and released him from false charges and afflictions. For this reason, *Reṇukā Gītam* came to be revered in his spiritual lineage as a highly potent hymn of protection.
It is traditionally believed that those who recite this Gītam daily with sincere devotion and unwavering faith receive the powerful protection of Mother Reṇukā. Worldly difficulties gradually subside, hidden dangers are averted, and spiritual obstacles are removed. For a sādhaka, its regular recitation strengthens faith, purifies the heart, and supports steady progress on the spiritual path. In times of confusion, helplessness, or severe crisis, wholehearted recitation of "Reṇukā Gītam" is regarded as a direct appeal to the compassionate Mother, whose grace can reveal an unexpected way forward.
Since the time of Śrī Gaṇapati Muni, the daily recitation of "Reṇukā Gītam" has remained a cherished practice among generations of his disciples. It is not merely a hymn of praise, but a living prayer of surrender, a shield of divine grace, and a sacred testimony to the protective Mahimā of Mother Reṇukā.
