Introduction to Surya Gitam

Surya Gitam is a radiant hymn composed by Kavyakantha Vasishtha Sri Ganapati Muni in praise of Surya, the divine Sun. In these verses, Surya is not viewed merely as the physical orb shining in the sky, but as the visible gateway to the supreme spiritual light that sustains, illumines, and governs all worlds.

A significant historical background adds great depth to this hymn. In 1918, Sri Ganapati Muni, along with his wife and children, visited Arasavilli for the first time, the sacred shrine famous for Lord Surya Bhagavan. As readers may recollect, Muni was born by the boon of Lord Surya Bhagavan after the severe austerities of his mother, Smt. Narsamamba. Yet, until then, he had not visited the very shrine connected with the divine grace behind his birth. At Arasavilli, Muni spent three days in intense meditation and prayer to Surya Bhagavan. It was after this profound spiritual experience that he composed Surya Gitam, a powerful and effective prayer.

The hymn begins by glorifying the solar sphere as the shining jewel placed upon the head of the Lord of the three worlds. Surya is described as the source of immeasurable wealth, the abode of light, the treasure of the Vedas, and the seat of the universal life-force. He is adored by the wise at all times because all beings live, see, eat, move, and shine by his power.

Ganapati Muni then turns the vision inward. The solar orb is compared with the heart of the Supreme Being, and the light seen in the Sun is identified with the inner light shining within the heart and the eye. The seeker is instructed to behold the witness within the eye through steady and pure vision. Thus, Surya Gitam becomes not only a hymn of praise, but also a subtle yogic teaching, guiding the aspirant from the outer Sun to the inner Self.

The hymn beautifully unites devotion, Vedantic insight, and yogic contemplation. Surya appears as the protector of human and divine aspirations, the destroyer of sin, the light of the three worlds, and the supreme radiance behind fire on earth, the Sun in heaven, Indra in the mid-region, and the one Self-light perceived in various forms by the sages.

In its closing verse, the poet declares the glory of Vivasvan, the thousand-rayed Sun, and also the supreme abode shining within him. Thus, Surya Gitam celebrates Surya as both the cosmic illuminator and the spiritual doorway to the highest light.
