Kavyakantha Sri Ganapati Muni's

Indrani Saptasati

caturthaṃ bārhataṃ śatakam - prathamo halamukhī stabakaḥ

Indrani Saptasati - The 700 Verses Mystical work of Kavyakantha Sri Ganapati Muni

This Stabaka begins with a tender prayer to the lotus-eyed Queen of heaven. Her smile is compared to white drops of milk-ocean waves, filled with the stream of love, and invoked as the remover of sorrow. Śrī Gaṇapati Muni prays that the youthful consort of Hari may guide Bhāratabhūmi, whose feet have slipped from the path and whose splendour has declined, back to the pure path and to true prosperity.

A profound philosophical vision unfolds in the early verses. The Mother is described as the conscious power of Brahman, appearing as though separate for the sake of cosmic manifestation. She creates the divine pair, endowed with bliss, knowledge, splendour, and noble qualities. In the luminous male form, Brahman shines as “I am He,” while in the feminine form She gives the awareness, “I am His Śakti.” Thus, the Stabaka reveals Śacī as the cosmic intelligence by which the Divine knows and expresses Its own power.

Śacī is worshipped as the supreme Mother of the worlds, destroyer of sin, praised in the web of Tantras, and pure intelligence pervading every mode of experience. She is mati, ruci, rati, and sthiti — understanding, radiance, delight, and stability. Wherever the poet’s intelligence moves toward an object of knowledge, he prays that She, the all-pervading one, may shine there.

The middle verses become a powerful declaration of surrender. When human effort fails, when the weak are oppressed by the strong and wicked, the Mother’s feet alone become the refuge. The poet reflects deeply on the relation between pauruṣa — personal effort — and daiva — destiny or divine grace. He rejects helpless fatalism and says that whether past merit exists or not, he has taken refuge in Her feet now. He does not seek distant heaven or future-life rewards; he asks for the needed fruit in the present, yet even if She gives or does not give, protects or does not protect, he will not abandon Her purifying feet.

The Stabaka concludes with a prayer that the moon-faced beloved of Indra, the friend of Indra’s heart, may make Gaṇapati Muni capable of protecting Bhārata. This hymn is therefore a beautiful union of metaphysics, devotion, self-effort, surrender, and national service.
